SUE Utility Locating

Peak Locating provides SUE utility locating: locating and marking buried utility facilities ahead of ground disturbance, and documenting what was marked so the record holds up after the paint is gone.

SUE locating and private locating are different work

SUE utility locating covers the buried utility facilities in the work area, located and marked to the requirements that apply to the project, the facility owner and the province. It is separate from private utility locating, where Peak locates privately owned lines and site services outside normal One Call scope at the request of a property owner or contractor.

Keeping the two distinct matters on site: crews need to know which facilities have been located under which request, and what still needs attention.

Private Utility Locating

Locating as damage prevention

A locate is only useful if the crew on site can read it, trust it and work around it. Our locators work to the applicable locate standards and facility owner requirements, mark what they find clearly, and communicate conflicts or unlocatable conditions rather than leaving them to be discovered by an excavator.

Where a facility cannot be located with confidence, we say so and document it. Honest field notes are part of damage prevention.

  • Electromagnetic locating of conductive facilities
  • Paint, flag and stake marking to applicable colour codes
  • Locate sketches and field notes for each ticket
  • Communication of conflicts, clearances and unlocatable facilities

Marked on the ground, captured with RTK/GNSS

This is where Peak’s approach differs most. After facilities are located and marked, crews capture the markings and relevant features with RTK/GNSS positioning during the same visit. The locate then leaves more than paint: a digital sketch or map of what was marked and where, reviewed against the field markings before it is issued.

Where the work calls for it, that record is provided in formats such as KML, SHP or CAD-compatible data. The format depends on how the information will be used; not every locate needs every format.
