Private Utility Locating

One Call locates cover facilities owned by registered members. Much of what sits on a private site does not fall into that scope. Peak Locating locates privately owned infrastructure so owners and contractors can plan work with a fuller picture of what is underground.

What falls outside One Call scope

On commercial, industrial, agricultural and residential properties, owners are commonly responsible for the lines beyond the utility service point. These facilities are often undocumented, altered over the years, or installed without as-built records.

  • Secondary power to outbuildings, lighting and equipment
  • Private gas lines to shops, heaters and appliances
  • Site communications and data lines
  • Water, sewer and irrigation lines where locatable
  • Facility and yard infrastructure on industrial sites

When the locate becomes the record

We work with the property owner or site representative to understand what is expected to be on site, locate what can be located, and clearly note what could not be traced.

Private lines rarely have reliable drawings, so the locate itself is often the best record the owner will have. Where the scope calls for it, marked lines are captured with RTK/GNSS and returned as a digital sketch or map the owner can keep for the next phase of work.

How Peak documents locates

Scope note. Private locating does not replace a One Call locate request. In Alberta that request goes through Utility Safety Partners (Alberta’s one-call centre); in other provinces, use that province’s one-call service. Anyone planning ground disturbance must still submit a One Call request as required.
